Format of the PSAT
The PSAT/NMSQT
stands for the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying
Test. The PSAT is generally taken during a student's
sophomore or junior year of high school, either in preparation for the SAT or
to qualify for National Merit Scholarships.
The PSAT test covers three
skill areas: Critical Reading, Math, and Writing skills.
PSAT Critical Reading Section
The Critical Reading portion of the PSAT consists of two
sections with a total of 48 multiple-choice questions. Test takers have 25 minutes to complete
each section.
Critical Reading questions on the PSAT consist of 13 Sentence Completion
questions and 35 Passage-Based Reading questions. Sentence Completion
questions test your ability to understand and identify the meaning
of vocabulary words in the context of a sentence. Passage-Based Reading
questions test your ability to understand information presented in a passage.
PSAT Math Section
The Math section of the PSAT consists of two sections
with a total of 28 multiple-choice
questions and 10 student-produced response questions. Test takers have 25
minutes to complete each section.
The purpose of the Math section is to test your ability to solve problems
using your knowledge of Arithmetic, Algebra, and Geometry.
PSAT Writing Section
The Writing section of the PSAT consists of one section with a total of 39
multiple-choice questions. Test takers have 30 minutes to complete the Writing
section.
Writing questions on the PSAT consist of 14 Identifying Sentence Errors
questions, 20 Improving Sentences questions, and 5 Improving Paragraphs
questions. The purpose of the Writing section is to measure your ability to
understand and interpret standard written English.
